One thing you will find in this forum is that the overall majority have a very negative opinion of Rosetta Stone. In languages as well as others who are truly advanced polyglots. There are many alternatives that are better and cheaper than Rosetta Stone, which to me its a ripoff for what you won't get. You will not become fluent with just one course. Overall is best to use a combination of these and other courses to truly get a solid grasp of a language. Finally some people like Laoshu recommend Teach Yourself which is another good course for beginners to use to get a good foundation for a language. If you need portability I would also recommend Pimsleur which I recently finished the three levels and was truly nice to use, its basically 30 minute audio lessons that use a different approach to Michel Thomas. Another course I have also used is Michel Thomas, which is an audio based course that also takes you from scratch and explains to you the grammar and word usage and was really responsible for helping me get an initial grasp of a language. I have tested the Spanish versions of which I am fluent and its also excellent and it only costs around $30-$40 dollars. I think this is possibly the best course for truly picking up a language from scratch and become proficient in 6-8 months. Some people who are true language learners\polyglots (Professor Arguelles, Fanatic, etc.) highly recommend Assimil, which is a combination book and CDs which I am currently using with great success. Finally, you cannot even resell it, once you post it on Ebay it gets promptly removed by the people at Rosetta Stone.Īs I stated before there are better alternatives that will truly take you farther in whatever language you're learning.

Besides that, one has to be chained to their computer to use it, you can't take it with you when you are away from home, on top of that you can oly install it on one computer, if you have a second computer at home or need to reinstall it, you are out of luck. RS might seem nice the first few lessons but once you reach complex sentences it becomes next to impossible to define what that picture says. Some examples of what you will find in Rosetta Stone are phrases that one will never use like "the boy is under the ball, the people have the pen", etc.

Once someone asks them a question in the x language they are stumped and have no clue as to what they are being asked. You can talk to a person who has been in a Rosetta Stone commercial touting how awesome it is, etc. Have you ever met someone that is fluent due to Rosetta Stone? Its all marketing and fancy graphics. They assume these important items aren't necessary. Rosetta Stone doesn't explain to you the word usage, grammar, conjugation, gender, etc. Its overpriced, over hyped, and one will never become fluent with Rosetta Stone. I personally have a dislike for Rosetta Stone, in my personal opinion it is a waste of time, money.

There are better and more affordable options to use than Rosetta Stone. I just thought that maybe the lessons afterward weren't as useful? Has anyone actually finished a Rosetta Stone program through level 5? If so, how would you describe your level of understanding/speaking upon completion?Įscuaforest, hello and welcome to the forum you'll enjoy communicating with other people who have an interest in languages as well as others who are truly advanced polyglots.

Should I finish? i have free access so that's no issue. I really felt like it took my grammar up a notch. I have completed the Rosetta Stone Program for Spanish (Latin American) through level 3.
